Royal Navy Reserves – OP Hermes

I spent two years in the Royal Navy Reserves training to be a maritime reserve officer. As part of this training I spent 8 weeks training with the RNR which included 2 weeks at sea.
I really enjoyed my time in the RNR and it really highlighted all the amazing work that the Navy do for the country.

I learnt a lot about myself during my training and most importantly what type of leader I am. In all honesty I realised that I didn’t fit into the armed forces expectation of an ‘officer’. I realised that I am lot better suited to leadership within the civilian environment.

This is mostly because of my leadership style; I would consider myself a lot more democratic than autocratic. While I can still take charge in crisis situations I have to say command and control leadership didn’t suit me.
